Sometimes a Key Opens Up a Whole New World
Sometimes, a key is much more than an object used to open a door. It can represent security, trust and a sense of belonging. For Aladdin, who recently became part of the House of Opportunity community, that key has a particularly special meaning. For the first time in his life, he has a key to his own home.
Aladdin arrived in Bulgaria a year ago, fleeing war and seeking protection. Still under the age of 18 at the time, he had to adapt to a completely different and unfamiliar environment, far from everything and everyone he knew. Bulgaria offered him the opportunity to find safety and begin building a future.
Now 18, Aladdin is part of the House of Opportunity community. He stands out for his kind heart, strong spirit and determination in facing the challenges ahead. He speaks Bulgarian very well and continues to develop his language skills through lessons twice a week. He dreams of continuing his education and, with support, is taking steady steps towards making that ambition a reality.
Behind his modesty and perseverance is also a deep concern for the family he has left behind. Although he is far from his loved ones, they remain an important part of his life. There are new opportunities ahead: to learn, build friendships, discover new possibilities and gradually find his place in a new environment.
For young people who have sought international protection because of war, a safe place to live means much more than having a roof over their heads. It offers the chance to breathe, to feel accepted and to begin thinking about the future. Through its House of Opportunity programme, the Foundation for Social Change and Inclusion (FSCI) is able to welcome young people aged 18 to 25 who are seeking protection and support.
Aladdin’s story reminds us how much a new home can mean. Not simply as a place to live, but as a space where someone can feel safe, be themselves and take their first steps towards an independent life.
Welcome, Aladdin! The House of Opportunity team will do everything it can to support you as you work towards a safer and brighter future.
