Keep Moving Forward, Lia!

Lia is artistic, talented, quiet and determined. Her journey towards independent living at House of Opportunity took three years and four months. During that time, she gradually gained the confidence and skills to take the next steps in her life, not simply to survive on her own, but to build a future of her own choosing.

Today, Lia has a job where she has been working for three years. She has also explored the possibility of going to university, although she has decided to put that plan on hold for the time being. It remains an option for the future, when she feels ready to take that step.

Photography has become another important part of her journey. With support from the BCause Foundation, Lia completed two levels of photography training and received a camera of her own. This gave her the opportunity to develop her talent, explore her creativity and gain new skills.

During her time at House of Opportunity, Lia also became someone the team could rely on. She supported staff in their work with other young people, including those displaying challenging behaviours. Her contribution was valued, and she became part of the everyday life and shared experience of the community.

Looking back, we sometimes wonder whether the time we had together was enough for Lia to grow into the person she wanted to become. The journey towards independence is not always straightforward, especially for young people who have experienced abandonment, insecurity, a lack of belonging and the fear of being let down again.

What we know is that a safe environment, understanding, patience and unconditional support can help rebuild trust and confidence. These are not things that happen overnight. They take time, consistency and relationships in which young people feel accepted and respected.

House of Opportunity is not simply a place to stay. It is a place where young people can discover their strengths, try new things, make decisions and gradually prepare for life on their own terms.

Lia has now set off on her own path into adulthood. We are proud of what she has achieved and grateful to have been part of her journey. And although she has moved on, House of Opportunity remains a place she can turn to if she encounters difficulties along the way.

Because becoming independent does not mean having to face everything alone. Sometimes, knowing that there is still someone there for you makes all the difference.
