Human trafficking – how to avoid it
FSCI carried out a lecture at Social Center Opportunity in Sofia
According to statistics of the US State Department, 80% of the victims of international trafficking are women and 70% of them are victims of sexual exploitation. Statistics show that human trafficking affects 4 million people in the world, 300,000 of which are women from Eastern Europe.
Human trafficking is the trade in humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others;or for the extraction of organs or tissues, including surrogacy and ova removal;or for providing a spouse in the context of forced marriage.
Disadvantaged people and young state care leavers are particularly vulnerable to involvement in human trafficking or other illegal activity. There are many reasons for this – reasons might be hidden in their past, in the way they have grown up, in the lack of good example, low income, desire to get rich quickly, and even naivety.
As people who work with care leavers and people at risk of poverty, the team of FSCI believes that awareness of human trafficking and its dangers are crucial for the safety of every one of us. This is why in January Natalia Gradinarova, social pedagogue at Home Opportunity in Sofia, carried out a lecture before the young people from House of Opportunity in Sofia at the new Social Center Opportunity (Social Center Opportunity is located in Sofia, bul. Dimitar Petkov 75, floor 1, appartment 3).
