Typical housing building somewhere in Bulgaria …

This is a typical, grey and colourless apartment building. The space around it, once planned to be green space with grass and trees, has become a parking lot and the grass is full of cigarette butts and other slowly degrading litter. This is a typical scene that can be found in every major city in Bulgaria.

Our Sofia “House of Opportunity” project is based in such a building.

But this building is no longer typical. Our friends at HP yesterday helped us paint the front door and hallway, clean the green areas and plant trees and flowers in front of and around the entrance.

Over 20 HP volunteers attended. Some of them preferred to paint and now the entrance is in sunny orange which gives a light mood in these gloomy and rainy March days. Another group cleaned cigarette butts and other trash while others planted trees, flowers and shrubs. A Japanese quince and ginkgo biloba, three types of Thuja, dogwood, Mahoney and rhododendron will bring joy to the eye in spring and summer with yellow and soft violet. And around the block in the sunny months a rosemary and juniper, barberry, and euonymus, and spiraea will spread further flavour and colour.

Xenia, one of our Sofia House of Opportunity residents, helped our enthusiastic volunteers in the garden but Boyko and Yavor could not as they were on their way to England. Tonight they will watch the football match between England and Denmark from the benches of the legendary Wembley Stadium in London.

Yesterday they flew to Britain, where they will stay for three days. Their trip was organized by the Bulgarian Association MiniFootball and the “Give a Book” foundation. Our young men are in London along with 28 scorers of Bulgarian mini football teams. The greatest Bulgarian mini football player, Victor Gogov, is with them.
